Adobe set to introduce mobile application for AI image generation as OpenAI intensifies competition.
Adobe’s new artificial intelligence image models, Firefly Image Model 4 and Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, can generate hyper-realistic images based on user prompts.
Adobe announced at its MAX creativity conference in London that it plans to launch a mobile version of its AI image generation tool, Firefly, which enhances its competition with leading AI firms as they progress in visual applications. The company stated that Firefly will be available on both iOS and Android “soon,” though a specific release date was not provided.
“Creative people think on the go,” said Alexandru Costin, vice president of Adobe Firefly, in an interview. “One of the visions we have is for the Firefly mobile application to become a creative partner that sits with you all the time.” Costin mentioned that users could employ the mobile app to brainstorm ideas for an ad campaign while commuting, ensuring they have a mood board ready upon arrival at work.
Additionally, Adobe introduced its latest AI models, Firefly Image Model 4 and Firefly Image Model 4 Ultra, while announcing that its new Firefly Video Model for video generation is now available. The company emphasized that these systems can generate hyper-realistic images and videos in response to text prompts in a “commercially safe” manner, effectively preventing the incorporation of any intellectual property.
As Adobe continues to enhance its suite of creative tools with AI, it faces increasing competition from well-funded firms like OpenAI and Runway. Recently, OpenAI launched a native image generation feature that gained significant popularity for its ability to produce anime-style images reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s animation style. This feature drew substantial demand, prompting OpenAI’s leadership to comment on its impact on their graphics processing capabilities.
While Costin acknowledged the intensifying competitive landscape, he affirmed that Adobe is open to collaborating with other organizations. For instance, the company has formed partnerships with OpenAI, Google, and Runway to integrate various AI image generation tools into Firefly. “Competition is great,” Costin remarked. “We believe there will be models with different personalities and capabilities. Third-party partnerships provide not only opportunities for competition, but also foster innovation. It’s crucial to understand the needs of creatives and offer them the technology to meet those needs.”
