In the world of electronic music, true artistry often lies in the delicate blending of the old with the new, where familiar melodies and cultural traditions inspire fresh expressions of sound. A remarkable example of this is “Neu Om,” the debut album from Amanda Mur.

Hailing from the serene landscapes of Cantabria, Spain, Mur brings her background in classical composition and performance into uncharted territories with “Neu Om.” Throughout its nine tracks, she weaves together various influences—fado and cumbia; classical piano and Gregorian chant; folk traditions alongside contemporary sub-bass—creating a cohesive soundscape. This creative journey is significantly shaped by Tantric philosophies and the spiritual insights of Hildegard von Bingen.

The seamless integration of these diverse elements showcases Mur’s impressive production capabilities, beautifully enhanced by collaborations with the talented Madrid-based composer and sound designer Adrian Foulkes, as well as the innovative British grime producer Joker for additional mixing and mastering. Together, they craft a rich auditory experience filled with organic instrumentation and delicately sculpted electronics, all anchored by Mur’s captivating, operatic vocal style.

Much like other experimental artists such as Lucrecia Dalt or Juana Molina, Mur’s compositions blend intellect, spirituality, and sensuality. The opening track, “Maithuna”—drawing from a Sanskrit term for Tantric sexual union—invites listeners into a meditative exploration of vocal chants and gentle rhythms, presenting the act of love as a liberating expression. In contrast, the haunting melody of “Vapah” delves into the complex emotions surrounding unintended pregnancy, echoing the melancholic tones of fado.

Moreover, “Canto A Los Migrantes” touches upon the poignant experiences of migration, intertwining stirring string drones with dynamic rhythms. This piece serves as both a heartfelt tribute to the resilience of those who journey from their homelands and an acknowledgment of the profound sense of isolation they often face.

Embracing the unknown from the very beginning of her career, Mur embarks on an adventurous path filled with both challenges and rewards. This exploration of personal and artistic freedom resonates throughout “Neu Om,” creating a tapestry of sound that is both liberating and profoundly moving.
