Is Claude offline? Anthropic verifies service disruption.
Updated on Wednesday, April 15 at 1:37 p.m. ET — In a statement from Anthropic, it was confirmed that Claude was experiencing some challenges on Wednesday afternoon. These issues affected the Claude.ai desktop browser as well as the widely used Anthropic services Cowork and Claude Code.
“Claude.ai and Cowork are currently down for most users, and some may also experience difficulties logging into Claude Code. Our team is diligently working to restore service, and we truly appreciate everyone’s patience during this time,” the spokesperson mentioned.
You can find our original report about this situation below. We will continue to share updates as new information comes in and as service is restored.
Claude, the beloved AI chatbot from Anthropic, seemed to encounter a potential outage on Wednesday. Many users reported difficulty accessing Claude, with user error reports peaking around 10:30 a.m. ET, according to DownDetector.
By 1:00 p.m. ET, user error reports were beginning to decline, though DownDetector is still indicating persistent issues with Claude AI. A significant portion of users (38 percent) reported problems with Claude Chat, while 29 percent encountered challenges with Claude Code and 25 percent with the Claude App.
DownDetector illustrated a noticeable spike in user error reports related to Claude on Wednesday.
One user reported being unable to access the free version of Claude on desktop, encountering an error message that stated, “You’ve hit your limit for Claude messages. Please wait before trying again.” This appeared surprising, as they had not sent any messages to Claude previously. An additional message indicated, “Service is temporarily busy. You can try again shortly.” This may suggest that access for free users is temporarily restricted rather than a complete outage.
Claude has witnessed impressive growth so far in 2026. In March, during a notable period, an Anthropic spokesperson shared that the company was welcoming more than 1 million new users each day.
This is an evolving story…
