Trump’s May Have Divested WLFI (USD1) Stake Amid Positive Developments for U.S. Stablecoins

Stablecoins are gaining traction in U.S. policy discussions as the Senate has passed a significant regulation bill with strong bipartisan support. In light of this development, President Donald Trump and his family reportedly sold approximately 20% of their stake in the parent company of World Liberty Financial, a crypto business that issues its own stablecoin. DT Marks DEFI LLC now holds about 40% of the company that oversees WLFI, down from an earlier 60%, based on the legal disclosures available on the platform’s website. DT Marks DEFI is “an entity affiliated with Donald J. Trump and certain family members,” as stated. Trump’s extensive involvement in crypto has reportedly generated him tens of millions of dollars and has become central to the ongoing debate about digital asset regulation in the U.S.

The stablecoin bill currently awaits consideration in the House of Representatives, having faced temporary delays in the Senate as some Democrats raised concerns about Trump’s own stablecoin business. Despite allegations of corruption from lawmakers like Senators Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, and Chris Murphy, as well as debates over the appropriateness of the president’s involvement in regulating his own business, the bill’s progress could potentially stabilize World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin, provided the company is ready to meet strict reserve and oversight requirements.

While Trump’s political allies assert that his business dealings are transparent, the specifics surrounding his family’s crypto activities remain unclear, as there are no full disclosures of individual stakes, including the president’s. It’s still uncertain what the family’s exact ownership or managerial roles are with World Liberty Financial. Representatives from WLFI and Trump’s business interests did not respond to requests for comment from this source.

Moreover, Trump’s association with crypto continues to expand. He recently faced considerable criticism for hosting a private dinner with leading investors in his personal memecoin, many of whom were foreign nationals whose identities were not disclosed. Previously a crypto skeptic, Trump has sold multiple rounds of non-fungible tokens (NFTs); this year, his media company announced plans to raise $2.5 billion to establish a bitcoin treasury; and his son Eric has been actively involved in a new bitcoin mining initiative. There are few areas of the industry where the president does not maintain close connections.
