The follow-up to 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water continues the enchanting visual legacy set by its predecessors. The trailer captivated me with the enchanting sight of iridescent, hot air balloon-like creatures, and the return of the beloved tulkun from Avatar: The Way of Water. However, what truly piqued my interest was the introduction of the Mangkwan clan, a new Na’vi people with whom Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) will interact.
Each Avatar film has beautifully introduced a new Na’vi clan. The original introduced the forest-dwelling Omatikaya clan, while Avatar: The Way of Water showcased the Metkayina clan, who reside among Pandora’s breathtaking reefs. These clans became dear allies to Jake and Neytiri, but the Mangkwan clan, also known as the Ash People, appears to embark on a different journey.
Residing amidst ashy, volcanic ruins, the Mangkwan seem to ally themselves with Avatar antagonist Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Their leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin), possesses a striking ability to ignite her hands without suffering any harm—could she be a firebender? This evokes the delightful thought of a crossover between Avatar and Avatar: The Last Airbender, allowing for a marvelous fusion of these rich narratives.
For a deeper glimpse into the world of the Ash People and the mesmerizing landscapes of Avatar: Fire and Ash, feel free to immerse yourself in the full trailer above. Just from these captivating moments, it seems the Avatar franchise is poised to grace us with yet another visual masterpiece, possibly earning accolades for Best Visual Effects once more. The journey of Avatar: Fire and Ash awaits us in theaters on December 19.
