We reviewed the top laptops for college students heading back to school.
Discover a closer look at the Acer Swift X 14 (2024).
Strong, efficient, and equipped with ample ports, last year’s Acer Swift X 14 stands out as an excellent choice for students seeking a reliable Windows laptop. Whether you prefer Windows to Mac or need compatibility, this laptop has you covered. Its dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card meets the requirements of many engineering programs, enhancing its capabilities for both academic work and light gaming.
This 14.5-inch creator laptop may not be the newest on the market, but it is among the most practical options, all while remaining budget-friendly. With an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, it achieves an impressive multi-core score, optimizing performance for various tasks. Although it does tend to run a bit louder, this is a reasonable compromise given its speed performance compared to many other models.
Paired with a Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series GPU, the Swift X 14 efficiently handles specialized software and gaming needs. In our tests, we enjoyed over eight and a half hours of usage, which, while slightly below the median for Windows laptops, is commendable for a device with discrete graphics. While the specific RTX 4070 model was unavailable during our assessment, alternatives with the RTX 4050 and 4060 are readily available, offering an excellent balance between performance and price. The 4050 base model includes 512GB of storage, suitable for most students, while the 4060 provides a full terabyte for those needing extra space.
Aesthetically, the Swift X 14 leans towards a modest design, which might not appeal to everyone; however, its build quality is deemed excellent, featuring a responsive keyboard, a spacious touchpad, and a vibrant 120Hz OLED display that delivers a smooth viewing experience. The connectivity options include a wonderful mix of modern and legacy ports, such as an HDMI port and a microSD card slot.
While Acer does offer a newer version, the Swift 14 AI, it is advisable for students to consider sticking to conventional processors, as this model opts for ARM processors and lacks a dedicated GPU.
