Rhiannon Giddens’ Upcoming Festival Honors Black Music, Art, and Culture in North Carolina.
Attendees joyfully watched and danced as New Dangerfield performed during the Biscuit & Banjos festival in Durham, N.C., on April 26.
Curated by Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens, the Biscuits & Banjos festival is dedicated to the reclamation and celebration of Black music. This uplifting event took place in Durham, N.C., and featured soulful performances from artists such as Taj Mahal, Infinity Song, Rissi Palmer, and a heartfelt reunion of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Alongside the music, attendees were invited to explore Durham’s rich Black history through a walking tour of Black Wall Street, engaging panel discussions, square and line dancing, and a delightful juke joint-themed gathering with vibrant drag performances.
Reflecting on the festival, photographer Cornell Watson expressed his desire to capture the essence of rediscovery and joy within Black folk, country, blues, and Americana music. He noted that this festival felt like a warm embrace, a moment for reconnecting with and celebrating cultural roots.
When asked about his favorite captured moment, Watson chose a vibrant photograph of the original Carolina Chocolate Drops performing together for the first time in over a decade. His creative approach captured their energy beautifully, making use of light trails to honor their artistry.
During his experience, Watson discovered the joy of square dancing, likening it to an adult version of “Simon Says,” filled with smiles and laughter during the “Friday Night Frolic.” These moments served as a beautiful reminder of happiness that lingers long after the event.
The festival embraced the community spirit by offering enriching programming for free. It brought together musicians and intellectuals like Amythyst Kiah, Tressie McMillan Cottom, and Michael Twitty, making it a truly inclusive event. Watson reflected on his experience of moving between various activities, overflowing with inspiration, even humorously noting his missed opportunity to enjoy some biscuits.
