Bit Digital Shifts Away from BTC Mining to Prioritize ETH Staking Approach
Bit Digital (BTBT) is changing direction to become a dedicated ether staking and treasury operation, the company announced Wednesday. The New York-based firm will completely exit the bitcoin mining business, reallocating its assets and capital into its expanding ETH strategy. The company began acquiring its ether position and developing Ethereum staking infrastructure in 2022. As of March 31, Bit Digital held 24,434.2 ETH, valued at $44.6 million, and 417.6 BTC worth $34.5 million. It plans to gradually convert the remaining bitcoin into ether.
To facilitate this transition, Bit Digital has initiated a process to sell or wind down its bitcoin mining operations. Net proceeds from this divestiture will be reinvested in ether. No specific timeline was provided for the sale or conversion of assets. This announcement represents a significant shift for a company formerly rooted in bitcoin mining, especially in light of the remarkable performance of BTC compared to ETH, with the ETH/BTC ratio declining 75% since December 2021.
However, this move is not entirely unexpected, considering the challenges in the mining industry since last year’s halving reduced BTC rewards for miners, which has tightened profit margins despite the rise in bitcoin prices. The firm has also disclosed plans to sell shares to fund further ether acquisitions, and its high-performance computing (HPC) subsidiary, WhiteFiber, has submitted a draft registration letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding a potential public offering. BTBT is down 3.41% in after-hours trading.
