Bluesky Introduces Blue Verification Checks, Similar to Twitter’s Previous System

Bluesky is introducing new methods to identify genuine, verified accounts on its social media platform. According to an official update on Bluesky’s blog, select accounts will now display a blue checkmark next to their names. Additionally, Bluesky will allow “select independent organizations” to verify the accounts of their employees directly. For instance, the New York Times can now issue blue ticks to its journalists.

Users will be able to see which organization granted the mark to a user by tapping on a verified account’s blue check.

This new system resembles the blue checkmark verification that Twitter implemented prior to its rebranding as X, where checkmarks became available to anyone who paid for a subscription. Bluesky has not disclosed specific criteria for which accounts will receive a blue checkmark, but it has indicated that it will proactively verify “authentic and notable” accounts.

This initiative adds another layer of verification on top of Bluesky’s verified domain system, allowing individuals and organizations to use their domain as their username. This feature remains accessible to all users. Concerning the blue checks, Bluesky mentioned in its update that the platform is currently not accepting direct applications for verification; instead, it plans to launch a request form for notable and authentic accounts interested in becoming verified or trusted verifiers.
