Bluesky Disruption: Understanding the Cause

Bluesky Experiences Temporary Outage Due to Cyber Attack

Bluesky, the social media app cherished by many former X users, encountered a significant outage on Thursday, April 16. In an update shared through the official Bluesky profile, the app’s leadership explained that the disruption was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. “Our team received a report of intermittent app outages at about 11:40 PM PDT on April 15, 2026,” the post detailed. “They worked diligently throughout the night to address a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which intensified over the following day.”

In reassuring news, Bluesky confirmed that there was no indication of compromised user data as a result of the attack. The outage impacted various features such as the app, feeds, notifications, and search functions. Further updates are expected by 1 PM ET on Friday.

The Bluesky status page reflects that the app is currently fully operational, boasting an impressive 99.983 percent uptime over the past 90 days. DDoS attacks are a relatively straightforward, albeit troublesome, tactic employed by cybercriminals, flooding servers with an overwhelming number of requests. Although such attacks have been around since the inception of the World Wide Web, their effects, as demonstrated by the recent outage, remain impactful.

Users began reporting issues in the early morning hours, with DownDetector recording a surge in error notifications. (It’s noteworthy that DownDetector and similar platforms are operated by the same organization, Ziff Davis.)

Bluesky has experienced substantial growth, particularly following significant events in social media history. However, recent data indicates that the number of daily active users has plateaued. We remain hopeful for a swift return to normalcy as Bluesky continues to navigate these challenges.
