CureIS Healthcare Files Lawsuit Against Epic Systems Accusing Them of an Attempt to Sabotage Its Operations

CureIS Healthcare, a managed care services company, filed a civil lawsuit against Epic Systems on Monday night, alleging the electronic health record (EHR) giant has executed a “multi-prong scheme to destroy” CureIS’ business. CureIS provides technology and managed services for government programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and other state health initiatives.

In a 40-page complaint released on Tuesday, CureIS claims Epic has interfered with its customer relationships, blocked access to necessary data, and raised unfounded security concerns, among other anticompetitive practices.

“Epic believes in free and fair competition, and we also believe our customers are in the best position to choose the right solutions to meet their needs—whether with Epic or by adopting other products and services,” an Epic spokesperson stated. “We are aware of the complaint filed by CureIS, and we look forward to setting the record straight in court.”

The lawsuit is the latest legal challenge facing Epic, which manages medical records for approximately 280 million patients in the U.S. and offers various other healthcare tools. Data startup Particle Health filed an antitrust lawsuit against the company in September, claiming Epic has used its dominance in the EHR space to stifle competition in other markets utilizing that data. “Particle’s claims are baseless,” Epic remarked at the time.

CureIS’ suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The company is represented by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, the same firm representing Particle.
