Dinamarca has a nurturing affection for vocalists. In 2019, he welcomed a variety of artists to lend their voices to his LP Sol De Mi Vida, and his journey has continued with collaboration on a reggaeton EP featuring Bay Area singer La Favi, a trap single with the emerging Chilean talent AKRIILA, and now this harmonious blend of hyperpop and reggaeton with Ángel Ballesteros—lead singer of the spirited trio Meth Math.
Where Dinamarca’s earlier productions echoed the energetic beats of Meth Math tracks like “Mermelhada” from their previous LP Chupetones, he has since softened those edges, cultivating a sound that resonates with a mellow and joyful essence. His initial collaboration with Meth Math leaned towards trap, while his solo debut album soñao embraced his love for trance. Pachamami continues this uplifting journey, weaving reggaeton and dancehall rhythms into expansive and dreamlike forms that Ballesteros illuminates with her enchanting, emotional nuances.
Ballesteros delivers breezy hooks through a gentle layer of Auto-Tune. The chorus of “swag”—“Porque te gusta mi swag” (Why do you like my swag)—swings gracefully like a dance, her silky voice adding warmth to the dark imagery within her lyrics. On “savasana,” she artfully intertwines the concepts of sleeping (dormir) and dying (morir) in a poetic embrace. Her lyrics capture a whimsical melodrama reminiscent of the playfulness found in Panic! At the Disco’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Some of the album’s most delightful moments arise when Ballesteros embraces the absurd, swirling through the playful rhythms of “papirrimi” while her expressions elevate the experience to exhilarating heights, and the childlike joy found in “chairo” adds to the charm.
Dinamarca does not let reggaeton’s infectious rhythm do all the talking; he crafts the rhythmic foundations of reggaeton, dancehall, and baile funk into more fluid forms. On “shhh…,” a pair of closed claps hint at baile funk’s groove but dance around its sharper edges; the soothing plods of sub bass on “papirrimi” create gentle spaces in their rhythm, and the lively hi hats and buoyant synths on DTF outline a tranquil trap beat. Oftentimes, Dinamarca’s compositions blend various styles, reflecting a masterful touch from his years of experience as a DJ. Together, he and Ballesteros sprinkle the enchanting essence of hyperpop with their adventurous and emotional flair, adding a vibrant sparkle to this musical tapestry.
