DOGE Offers an AI Tool to Determine Which Federal Regulations to Eliminate
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and X, may have stepped back from the spotlight, but the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) continues to pursue its technological initiatives within the federal government. A recent report from The Washington Post reveals that DOGE is deploying an AI tool designed to help federal agencies identify and potentially eliminate regulations. The “DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool” has flagged 100,000 of 200,000 federal rules as candidates for removal.

The aim of DOGE is to create a “delete list,” with the aspiration of cutting federal regulations by half by September 1. This effort targets rules that may no longer be necessary and is being implemented across various agencies. Notably, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is reportedly utilizing this tool, having facilitated the drafting of “100% of deregulations,” while the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has reviewed over 1,000 regulatory sections using the AI.
However, there are concerns regarding the tool’s accuracy. Several HUD employees expressed to The Post that the AI often misinterprets legal language and inaccurately categorizes rules, raising questions about its reliability for policy-making.
The Deregulation Decision Tool is just one of the numerous AI-driven initiatives introduced under the previous administration. Other projects include a comprehensive AI upgrade for the U.S. General Services Administration and automated monitoring of EPA communications, as well as efforts to apply AI in coding for the Department of Veterans Affairs—ventures that have encountered challenges along the way.
