FIFA Strengthens Its Web3 Goals with the Creation of a Custom Blockchain Powered by Avalanche

FIFA, football’s global governing body, plans to use Avalanche’s network to power its own dedicated layer-1 blockchain. The FIFA Blockchain is an Avalanche L1, a customizable blockchain that employs Avalanche’s technology (also previously known as a subnet). This news follows the recent major Avalanche9000 upgrade, which aims to attract new developers and encourage the creation of customized L1s.

Thursday’s announcement marks another step in FIFA’s engagement with blockchain and cryptocurrency. In 2022, the football organization released a non-fungible token (NFT) collection on the Algorand blockchain prior to the Qatar World Cup. FIFA hinted at this transition in April, indicating its intention to shift its collection to an EVM-compatible blockchain while continuing to explore Web3 initiatives.

The NFT trend, which saw significant attention from large institutions and corporations, has largely faded following a challenging crypto market period that dampened industry enthusiasm for several years. However, FIFA’s ongoing focus on blockchain suggests that the technology’s potential remains relevant, as major organizations continue to explore its applications.

While FIFA currently has a World Cup NFT collection and a digital collectibles marketplace, further details regarding additional offerings on its new blockchain have not yet been disclosed.
