In a delightful twist, it’s amusing to think that it took Daniel Colussi, also known as Fortunato Durutti Marinetti, four albums to title a song “A Rambling Prayer.” In truth, every piece in his impressive discography resonates with this essence of spirit and reflection. Hailing from Turin and now calling Toronto home, Colussi is nestled within a vibrant circle of local artists who explore the beautiful balance between gentle melodies and innovative soundscapes. Collaborators like the soothing Sandro Perri, artful crooner Marker Starling, and others contribute to this enchanting musical tapestry.

With his 2020 DIY debut cassette, *Desire*, Colussi embraced lush string arrangements and whimsical woodwinds, evoking a sense of longing often found in timeless classics. He skillfully transcends traditional pop structures, favoring free-flowing verses that thoughtfully extend beyond conventional boundaries.

His latest work, *Bitter Sweet, Sweet Bitter*, beautifully showcases Colussi’s artistry, combining heartfelt lyrics with relaxing melodies. Surrounded by 13 talented musicians, including the gifted Eliza Niemi, the album radiates warmth and connection. The opening lines, sung a cappella, invite listeners into a serene sound world where exquisite soul and jazz elements blend effortlessly.

Colussi’s style, marked by a relaxed, introspective vibe, feels reminiscent of Lou Reed, allowing listeners to feel as if they are settling into a cozy, familiar embrace. In tracks like “Beware,” he and guest vocalist Victoria Cheong create a playful yet meaningful dialogue about navigating love and life, transforming it into a joyful experience. Softly cautioning against mundane conversations, the song encourages us to explore deeper connections.

Yet, within even his most tender moments, Colussi’s lyrics serve as heartfelt explorations rather than traditional love songs. They offer glimpses into raw emotions and reflections, creating an intimate narrative that resonates deeply. The centerpiece track, “A Rambling Prayer,” is a captivating journey where Colussi reveals his innermost thoughts, merging vulnerability with eloquence for over seven enchanting minutes.

In its tender conclusion, the song captures a profound moment: “I thought that you should know,” he shares gently, “that when you’re not here/ I measure my solitude by the ice cubes melting down in the tumbler/ So please never go far/ Please always stay close.” Though winding in its path, like all heartfelt prayers, it brings him to a serene understanding of love and connection.
