Major international media companies collaborate to challenge the misconception of climate apathy.

Most voters have a desire for proactive climate policy, yet many politicians may not fully recognize this. The 89 Percent Project is a compassionate initiative aimed at bringing this public support to the forefront.

A collaboration of some of the world’s most respected news organizations has embarked on a global climate reporting journey. This effort aims to amplify the voices of the ‘silent majority’ who care about the environment, helping them realize they are part of a much larger community.

Research indicates that 89% of people worldwide favor stronger government action on climate change, although many hesitate to express their views, mistakenly believing they are isolated in their sentiments.

Covering Climate Now (CCN), a global effort dedicated to enhancing climate journalism, has introduced The 89 Percent Project. This initiative seeks to dispel misconceptions around public support for climate action.

“The narrative surrounding climate action is transforming. Many in the media had no idea that public support is so robust. This change reframes the discussion from one of division to one of shared goals and collective purpose,” shares CCN co-founder Mark Hertsgaard.

Academics have identified a mental barrier known as ‘pluralistic ignorance’—the mistaken belief that one’s views are not broadly shared—as a reason many refrain from engaging in the climate conversation. “The absence of public discussion can reinforce the perception that others are unconcerned and makes collaboration less likely,” notes psychologist Cynthia Frantz, referencing a study on the topic.

Recently, researchers from Germany and Denmark surveyed 130,000 individuals across 125 countries, discovering that over two-thirds would willingly contribute 1% of their personal income to climate causes.

“Raising awareness about the widespread global support for climate action is essential for fostering a unified response to climate change,” they concluded.

This is where The 89 Percent Project shines. Prominent news outlets including The Guardian, Time, Reuters, and Al Jazeera have come together to support this initiative.

By reframing the climate conversation toward one of unity and collective possibility, Hertsgaard perceives it as a significant story that reveals a positive truth about our world. Since its launch on Earth Day in April, stories under the 89 Percent Project have reached a substantial audience, continuing to resonate as we approach global climate discussions this November, and beyond.

“What can individuals do?” Hertsgaard asks thoughtfully. “One impactful step is to share these uplifting stories with others, including political leaders. It appears that many decision-makers are also unaware of the widespread support for climate action.”
