Take Note: Learning Music Keeps Aging Brains Sharp
Budding dad bands and punk mum wannabees, take heart – picking up an instrument later in life can wonderfully enhance your mind, research reveals.
Two enlightening studies have shown that the joy of playing music promotes better brain health and can help fend off dementia, even if you begin your musical journey in your seventies.
In the first study, scientists at Japan’s Kyoto University revisited earlier research with a group of older learners. They found that those who stepped away from this enriching hobby experienced declines in memory performance and even showed signs of brain shrinkage.
The second study highlighted an uplifting discovery: the minds of older musicians were as vibrant as those of younger individuals with no musical training, while older non-musicians exhibited signs of cognitive decline.
These findings resonate with the concept of ‘cognitive reserve,’ which suggests that embracing new challenges as we age can effectively counteract mental slowing.
“A positive lifestyle helps older adults cope better with cognitive aging,” shared study lead Dr. Lei Zhang from Beijing’s Chinese Academy of Sciences. “It is never too late to take up and maintain a fulfilling hobby, such as learning an instrument.”
