Warner Bros. Discovery Renames Streaming Service Back to HBO Max

Warner Bros. Discovery is reverting its streaming service name from Max to HBO Max, and TV lovers everywhere are celebrating.

The decision, revealed during WBD’s 2025 upfront presentation on Wednesday, comes two years after the company removed the iconic HBO branding from its platform, leaving us with just Max. You know, the place where you can watch HBO shows—though the branding didn’t emphasize that.

The 2023 rebrand of Max followed its merger with a reality TV-focused streaming service, but WBD seems to be rethinking that choice, as it has already removed hundreds of seasons of those shows from the platform.

Instead of trying various strategies with uncertain outcomes (as Max did), WBD is committing to a “quality over quantity” approach moving forward. In a press release regarding the HBO Max name change, HBO’s parent company stated, “No consumer today is saying they want more content, but most consumers are saying they want better content.” The HBO Max rebrand goes into effect this summer, but reactions online have already begun as people respond to WBD’s shift.
