In their latest offering, Turbo Meltdown, HHY & The Kampala Unit beautifully intertwine the vibrant energy of gqom with the spirited essence of ’90s rave. The collaboration between Portuguese musician Jonathan Uliel Saldanha and Ugandan vocalist Florence Nandawula began in 2018, during Saldanha’s journey to Kampala. There, he connected with talented local musicians, paving the way for a rich blend of cultural influences. Since their 2020 debut, Lithium Blast, the group has expanded their artistic expression, incorporating additional talents like trombonist Kintu Jacob and percussionist Sekelembele from the Congolese Afrofuturist collective Fulu Miziki.
