How to Prevent Instagram from Displaying Your Likes in the Friends Tab

I have a little tale for you, one that may resonate. Imagine opening Instagram and gliding over to Reels, enjoying the vertical videos that catch your eye—a playful kitten on the subway, a delightful recipe, some invigorating workout tips, or a captivating travel moment. In these moments, you might believe your interactions are yours alone. However, a sudden revelation—perhaps a screenshot or a friendly text—might unveil that your likes and comments are visible to your mutual connections.

This story, while unsettling, holds a gentle solution. Recently, Meta introduced a new feature in Reels called Friends, allowing you to see public content your friends have engaged with and easy ways to converse about them.

Instagram shares that, “Friends will help you see which Reels the people you care about most are creating and engaging with.” But if you prefer to keep your interactions private, there’s a comforting path to ensure your digital life remains just that—private.

Here’s how to adjust your settings and keep your likes and comments away from the Friends tab in Reels.

Step 1:
Navigate to your “Settings and activity” page

The first step in securing your likes from the Friends tab is to navigate to your “Settings and activity” page. Simply visit your profile and click the gear icon in the top right corner.

To limit who can see your likes in the Friends tab, scroll down in the “Settings and activity” page and click on “Activity in Friends tab.”

Step 3:
Choose who can see your likes and comments on Reels

Once you click on “Activity in Friends tab,” you’ll open a page that allows you to decide if you’d like your followers who follow you back to view your likes and comments on Reels in the Friends tab or keep that information private. You can easily toggle between your choices.

Even if you disable visibility for your own interactions, you can still enjoy discovering your friends’ public engagements! Just tap the “Friends” tab at the top of Reels to explore.
