Instagram Map Raises Alarm Over Privacy Concerns Related to Location Sharing and Geotagging
Instagram’s newest feature, Map, is generating quite a buzz — and not necessarily in the way the platform had envisioned. This opt-in feature allows users to share their location in real-time with followers or their Close Friends list. However, it’s facing scrutiny from creators and everyday users who worry about their safety. As conversations unfold on social media, confusion has transformed into concern, prompting many to share messages urging others to “turn off” Instagram Map, fearing the app might be disclosing their live location to followers or, worse, strangers.
So, is Instagram sharing your location without your consent? According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the answer is no. He suggests this may be a misunderstanding. “Best we can tell, most of what’s happening is people are tagging stories and posts with location,” Mosseri expressed on Threads in response to the rising concern after the feature’s launch. “Then when they – or their followers – see those stories and posts on the map, they assume the author is sharing their live location, which is not the case. We can, and will, make it easier to understand exactly what’s happening.”
Instagram Map should only share your location-tagged content — such as Stories or posts with a geotag — and not a user’s live location. It is entirely opt-in, allowing you the choice to share that content publicly, with followers, or with a select group of Close Friends. Nevertheless, the introduction of this feature and the platform’s initial lack of clarity have left many users feeling uneasy.
Critics highlight that creators, especially women and marginalized users, already navigate a delicate balance regarding personal safety and online visibility. The concern extends beyond just a misunderstanding of the feature; it encompasses the broader implications of being locatable in any capacity.
