In the mid-1980s, Jess Sah Bi and Peter One emerged as influential figures in Côte d’Ivoire, weaving a magical tapestry of sound with their debut album, Our Garden Needs Its Flowers. This serene collection beautifully combines traditional Ivorian melodies with elements of American folk and country music, creating an enchanting space for reflection on love, unity, and the intricacies of justice. It stands as a gentle revolution, inspired by the harmonious blend of voices reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel and the heartfelt twang of Kenny Rogers, all while echoing the struggles of a postcolonial generation.

Not long after, Jess faced a profound personal challenge when illness took hold of him, eluding both medical and traditional remedies. It was through the power of community and faith during a spiritual revival that he found healing. His soulful debut solo album, Jesus-Christ Ne Déçoit Pas, serves as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to those who supported him and, above all, a tribute to the divine.

This album, despite its brief duration and intimate production, offers a rich and uplifting listening experience, filled with soothing strummed guitars, warm harmonica, and delicate synth pads. Jess sings tenderly in both French and Gouro, his voice resonating with a blend of humility and joy. “Il Veut Marcher Avec Toi” embodies the uplifting spirit of a serene Sunday morning, as the swaying harmonica spreads joy and celebration throughout the melody. The lively reprise later in the album adds a touch of brightness with its shimmering keys. “Séhé Voulé” dances along with a warm groove, inviting praise, while the steady rhythms found in “Fortifie-Toi” transform it into a shared prayer, a beautiful call-and-response moment.

As the album comes to a close, “Loué” envelops listeners in its transcendent beauty, with Jess’s distant vocals cascading over soothing synth pads that feel like they are drawing from another realm. His whispered repetition of “Thank You, Jesus… Thank You, Jesus,” resonates deeply, evoking an intimate conversation with the divine.

Upon its initial release, Jesus-Christ Ne Déçoit Pas found a modest audience, selling a few thousand cassettes in Ivory Coast.
