LayerZero’s ZRO Surge of 10% Following $55M Token Purchase by VC Firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z)
Interoperability protocol LayerZero’s native token (ZRO) experienced significant gains on Thursday following the announcement that venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz’s (a16z) crypto division has increased its stake in the project. The firm purchased an additional $55 million in ZRO tokens, committing to a three-year lock-up period, as stated by general partner Ali Yahya in a post on X. A16z has been a longstanding supporter of LayerZero Labs, the team behind the protocol, having participated in their $135 million Series A funding round in 2022 and the subsequent $120 million Series B round in 2023.
Following the news, ZRO saw a rise of 10% to $2.56 before retracting to a more modest gain of around 5% for the day, outperforming the broader CoinDesk 20 Index and bitcoin (BTC) during that timeframe.
LayerZero serves as a crucial infrastructure that enables communication between isolated blockchains through cross-chain messaging. The protocol currently supports 125 blockchains and has facilitated over 145 million cross-chain messages, amounting to $75 billion in value transfers. Its technology is integral to various projects, including PayPal’s stablecoin and DeFi protocols such as Ethena and Pendle, and it has been chosen as an issuance partner for Wyoming’s stablecoin initiative.
The recent investment is poised to enable LayerZero to expand its capabilities beyond interoperability, focusing on areas like token issuance, data management, governance, and enhancements to databases, according to an official communication.
