Let us take a moment to appreciate the talent of Camila Domínguez, known as Lila Tirando a Violeta, who stands as a beacon in the realm of modern electronic music. Her seamless exploration of ambient, industrial, psychedelia, bass, and club music, intertwined with the rich rhythms of her native Uruguay, is nothing short of remarkable. While the dream-like essence of her early works and her prolific output (over 20 albums and EPs in the last decade) may have taken some time to be fully appreciated, she has only grown more assured, and “Dream of Snakes” emerges as her most impactful creation to date.

Her previous notable release, 2023’s “Accela for Hyperdub,” was a complex tapestry of sound, filled with intricate micro-details that could envelop listeners in a whirlwind of sensation. In contrast, “Snakes” invites you to surrender to its infectious groove. Though it embodies dark themes—drawing inspiration, it appears, from the cinematic worlds of David Cronenberg—the music pulses with a profound, danceable human essence.

From the opening track “Unworthy Praise,” you can almost visualize the artist immersing herself in the ritualistic rhythms, harmonizing her breath with the unfolding tempo. “Heavy is the Soul,” featuring a collaboration with Lighght from Ireland, showcases retro-electro synth chords that align beautifully with her haunting vocals, creating a soundscape filled with futuristic gothic funk. The track “Rest and Relaxation” transports you, flowing in and out of a blissful state, weaving a buoyant club kick with an ethereal retro rave breakbeat, inviting you to sway gently with the rhythm.

Familiar yet refreshingly unique, the other Lighght collaboration, “Eco del Olvido,” resonates with Latin-influenced Detroit techno. Meanwhile, the production masterfully balances a forward-thinking approach with a deep connection to dance. It is rare to find artists who can blend such innovative sound with a driving energy that awakens the spirit—few can do this as well as Lila Tirando a Violeta. This album deserves recognition as one of the year’s finest offerings, and moreover, it invites you to engage with it—dancing freely and joyously.
