Living Colour: Intimate Performance at the Tiny Desk
This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk invites us to reflect on the anniversaries of cornerstone albums that have beautifully influenced the landscape of music and culture. Did we truly experience the resonant rhythms of Living Colour within the intimate confines of the Tiny Desk? Indeed, we did, and the band maintained their captivating energy, even at a softer volume.
Living Colour begins with the powerful anthem “Cult of Personality,” a striking statement that has echoed worldwide. However, the celebration continues with the 35th anniversary of *Time’s Up*, an album that has boldly represented Black rock bands drawing inspiration from legends like Jimi Hendrix, the soul of Motown, and the pioneering hardcore punk group Bad Brains, receiving heartfelt recognition just before *Time’s Up*. Guitarist Vernon Reid showcases his impressive array of sounds, alongside the deep, soothing grooves crafted by drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish. Corey Glover’s voice resonates beautifully, enveloping us in its warmth.
As we reflect on this smaller, more personal setting, one might wonder if the band will transition to a more compact touring approach. Regardless, this performance underscores that Living Colour effortlessly commands our attention and respect, demonstrating their significance both in history and in the present moment.
