Microsoft Report: One-Third of Business Leaders Are Contemplating AI as a Substitute for Employees

Microsoft’s annual Work Trend Index report has been released, and, as expected, AI is the focal point of the 2025 edition. The key finding is that 1 in 3 business leaders are considering layoffs due to the implementation of AI in their organizations. Specifically, 33 percent of leaders are already contemplating "headcount reductions" as a result of AI usage.

The report also underscores how "frontier firms" are incorporating AI into their operations. Microsoft defines these firms as being "structured around on-demand intelligence and powered by ‘hybrid’ teams of humans and agents." Microsoft anticipates that within the next 2 to 5 years, every organization will embark on their journey to becoming a frontier firm.

According to the report, 81 percent of business leaders express that AI agents will be "moderately or extensively integrated" into their company’s strategy within the next year. Nearly half of those surveyed identify "expanding team capacity" with AI agents as a top priority. Some businesses are already making this transition, with 46 percent of leaders indicating their companies use AI agents "to fully automate workflows or processes." Additionally, 24 percent report that AI is deployed throughout their organizations in various capacities.

Microsoft’s Work Trend Index emphasizes the significance of the "human-agent team," highlighting the continued relevance of human workers. Moreover, 78 percent of business leaders are considering hiring for AI-specific roles. Interestingly, AI startups are reportedly hiring at "nearly twice the pace" of larger tech companies, based on an analysis of LinkedIn data. For the 2025 Work Trend Index report, Microsoft surveyed 31,000 workers globally and incorporated LinkedIn labor market trends.
