In a serene journey through sound, Molly Joyce invites us into her world with her album “State Change.” At a young age, Joyce experienced a life-altering car accident that reshaped her path as a musician and composer. Though her left arm was injured, she emerged with a unique perspective that illuminates her creative process.
Her debut album, “Breaking and Entering,” introduced us to the Magnus electric toy organ, an instrument that harmonizes beautifully with her abilities. Continuing this exploration, her second album, “Perspective,” weaved the narratives of individuals with disabilities into soothing compositions. Now, with “State Change,” Joyce opens her heart to share her medical journey through a soothing narrative that flows from her past.
This seven-part suite gracefully unfolds from “August 6, 1999,” the day of the accident, to “July 27, 2007,” the culmination of her healing process. Drawing from her surgeons’ notes, Joyce transforms clinical terminology into ethereal expressions of resilience and recovery. Her gentle vocals carry profound emotional weight, reminding us of the human experience; as she reflects, “I am a girl/ In an accident/ I am a girl/ With an arm hanging by skin.” The poignant lyrics resonate deeply as she confronts her fears, allowing listeners to connect with their own emotions.
As “August 13 + 16, 1999” unfolds, we hear her frustrations echo through powerful sounds, manifesting the emotional complexity of her journey. Yet, through it all, Joyce’s innovative spirit shines. Employing new electronic instruments that she can adeptly manage with her left hand, she brings a transformative quality to her music. For instance, “July 27, 2007” showcases her creative exploration with the KAiKU Music Glove, while “April 19, 2000” illustrates her growth through dynamic sonic textures generated by a MUGIC device. Each note builds upon her experience, creating a tapestry of human emotion that evolves with the music.
“State Change” is a testament to Joyce’s honesty, capturing the full range of feelings from shock to healing. What could seem daunting—an album infused with raw depictions of medical trials—emerges as a source of catharsis and inspiration. As she shares the uplifting moment from October 26, 2001, when pins were removed from her hand, we witness a duet between her hands. With harmonious chords and a joyful spirit, Joyce reminds us that despite the challenges, there is always room for hope and growth.
