Current Moon Phase: September 1, 2025 – A Look at Today’s Lunar Appearance
The moon’s beauty changes gently from night to night, a reflection of its serene journey around Earth. This journey is known as the lunar cycle, a harmonious sequence of eight distinct phases that unfold over approximately 29.5 days. As the moon orbits, the Sun illuminates different portions of its surface, creating a soothing dance of light and shadow. Let’s explore what the moon has in store for us tonight, Sept. 1.
What is today’s moon phase?
As of Monday, Sept. 1, we are graced with a Waxing Gibbous moon, where 62% of its surface is illuminated for us to admire. There’s an enchanting view awaiting our gaze tonight. With the naked eye, you can spot the Tycho Crater, Mare Crisium, and Mare Tranquillitatis. If you have binoculars, you’ll also be able to witness the Mare Nectaris, Mare Frigoris, and the Apennine Mountains. And with a telescope, a world of wonders unfolds, revealing glimpses of the Apollo 11 landing site, the Descartes Highlands, and the Rupes Recta, a stunning lunar fault line stretching 68 miles.
When is the next full moon?
The next full moon will grace the sky on Sept. 7, following the last full moon on Aug. 9.
What are moon phases?
Moon phases beautifully illustrate the 29.5-day cycle of the moon’s orbit, delicately shifting the angles between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. These phases depict how we perceive the moon from our viewpoint on Earth as it gracefully travels around us. Although we consistently see the same side, the amount of illumination varies, giving rise to full moons, half moons, and moments when the moon seems to disappear entirely. There are eight primary moon phases, cycling through a soothing rhythm:
- New Moon – The moon is positioned between Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on the side we observe.
- Waxing Crescent – A gentle sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).
- First Quarter – Half of the moon glows softly on the right side, appearing as a half-moon.
- Waxing Gibbous – More than half shines brightly, but it’s not quite full yet.
- Full Moon – The entire face of the moon is illuminated, fully revealing its beauty.
- Waning Gibbous – The light begins to recede gently on the right side.
- Last Quarter (or Third Quarter) – Another half-moon, now with the left side glowing softly.
- Waning Crescent – A delicate sliver of light remains on the left side before the moon quietly returns to darkness.
