Firefox introduces an AI off switch.
Embrace Your Preferences: Firefox Introduces an AI Killswitch
Not a fan of AI? Feeling overwhelmed by the constant emergence of AI features in apps and devices? Firefox is here with some positive news. The beloved web browser, operated by the non-profit organization Mozilla, has just launched an update that includes an AI killswitch.
That’s right. With a simple toggle in the Firefox settings, you can choose to remove any AI integrations or features from the application.
To turn off AI features in Firefox, ensure you download the latest update, Firefox 148, which has just been released. After updating, navigate to Settings and then to AI Controls. In the AI Controls menu, click the toggle for Block AI Enhancements. This will turn off all AI features in Firefox, including ChatGPT and other chatbots typically found in the sidebar, AI-powered link reviews, and smart tab group suggestions, just to name a few.
As you check the settings, you’ll easily find the “AI killswitch” option waiting for you.
Traditionally, Mozilla kept Firefox largely free from AI features until last December, when the new CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, announced the introduction of AI in Firefox. The response from users was significant enough that Mozilla soon expressed its commitment to creating an “AI off-switch,” giving users the choice to use or remove AI features entirely.
With today’s update, it seems Mozilla has honored that promise, offering an AI-free version of its web browser. Ajit Varma, Head of Firefox, shared that this initiative is all about user choice. “In an era where many in the industry are moving toward closed, AI-driven ecosystems, we’re choosing a different path, one that prioritizes people,” Varma said in a statement. “We’ve listened to our users—some who prefer no AI, and others who want the power to decide how and when it appears in their browser. These AI controls are our way of fulfilling that promise.”
