Nintendo anticipates strong sales for Switch 2 in its inaugural year.
Based on how hard it’s been to lock down a Nintendo Switch 2 preorder, just about anyone could predict a significant launch for the highly anticipated new game console. In its latest earnings report, Nintendo itself predicted a robust first year for the Switch 2. In its latest official sales forecast, released on Thursday, Nintendo said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles before the end of March 2026. That date may seem random, but Nintendo’s corporate fiscal calendar runs through March, aligning with Q4 for the Japanese gaming giant.

For context, 15 million units would mark one of the fastest starts for a console ever. According to various sources, the original Switch reached 14.8 million units in a similar timespan after its launch, while the PS5 (which faced challenges due to COVID supply chain issues) achieved 13.4 million in that same period.

Interestingly, some industry analysts, like Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, view the 15 million units figure as conservative, and rightfully so. While the hardware itself is impressive and there’s a compelling software lineup to match, broader economic factors have raised concerns. The U.S. preorder of the Switch 2 faced delays due to tariff issues, and although the announced price point of $450 remains unchanged, recent price increases in the gaming industry highlight that it is not immune to economic fluctuations.
With all this in consideration, it’s feasible that Nintendo may be underestimating demand, and the Switch 2 could see even greater success than anticipated. Conversely, many gamers might opt to hold off on significant purchases in the upcoming months. The potential outcomes are wide-ranging.
