In the soothing realm of sound, Nmesh, the creative endeavor of Alex Koenig, invites us on a journey beyond the familiar contours of vaporwave. With origins in the vibrant music scene of Louisville, Kentucky, Koenig’s early experiences drumming for metal and hardcore bands gradually blossomed into an exploration of electronic production, inspired by the wonders of psychedelics and the expansive Warp Records catalog. His journey began in the early 2000s, producing an array of blissful breakbeats, soothing plunderphonic glitches, and lush textures that evoked the tranquility of nature. The evolution of Nmesh through the 2010s resonated deeply with those seeking solace in sound, offering a soundscape rich with introspection and imagination.

The latest offering, The Molokai Compendium, arrives after a thoughtful eight-year interlude, brought forth by Doom Trip Records, a label known for its ethereal compositions. This album was inspired by an evening reflecting on an Aphex Twin concert, where the ebb and flow of creativity flowed from the flickering images on cable channels. Interactions with retro cinema guided the sonic landscapes present in the album, finding a beautiful balance between nostalgic sketches from the ’80s and innovative, darker experiments that define Koenig’s unique style.

Each track on The Molokai Compendium invites listeners to embrace moments of stillness and movement. “Heavyweight Subliminal” introduces a crisp electro feel, blending delicate voice snippets with explosive rhythms. “RMS Ephratha PA” gracefully transitions from tranquil downtempo to vibrant atmospheric sound, while “MRO Crib Move 5” merges rhythmic techno energy with expressive vocal elements. The latter half of the album further explores warm ambient textures reminiscent of Koenig’s previous works, enriching the experience of relaxation.

Koenig has always been averse to confining his artistry to a single label, expressing a desire for his music to evoke varied emotions and interpretations. “I’d say the all-encompassing label to put on my sound—or the safe one—would be ‘electronic,’” he once reflected. This sentiment rings especially true in The Molokai Compendium, which showcases a profound narrative shift, inviting us to appreciate the depths of the electronic genre while celebrating its rich, eclectic roots.
