Canvas classroom platform expands AI capabilities through OpenAI enhancements.

Thousands of educational institutions using the popular ed-tech platform Canvas for coursework, tests, and lesson plans will soon enjoy enhanced AI features in the upcoming months. As part of a series of thoughtful collaborations within the industry, Instructure, the platform’s parent company, has partnered with OpenAI. This initiative will enable Canvas to utilize OpenAI’s technology, enriching the learning experience for all users.

Teachers will have the opportunity to access AI-powered personalization, feedback, and assessment data. The companies highlight that routine and low-value tasks will be automated, allowing students to embark on more personalized and adaptable learning journeys, complete with enhanced assignment and evaluation interactions supported by the AI.

Canvas’ inaugural collaboratively designed AI tool, the new “LLM-Enabled Assignment” feature, introduces an exciting way for teachers to create a customized chatbot experience for their classrooms. This allows for tailored interactions where students can engage meaningfully with learning objectives through the GPT-like tool. Teachers can gather valuable insights from the LLM to assess student submissions effectively. “This feature provides a valuable opportunity to teach students how to use these tools responsibly and effectively, all within a quality educational framework that nurtures critical thinking and advanced skills,” shared Shiren Vijiasingam, chief product officer at Instructure.

In June, Anthropic, creators of the Claude chatbot, announced an integration with Canvas’ Learning Tools Interoperability, enabling students to interact with Claude directly while completing coursework. This integration allows users to enable Claude and other tools alongside the OpenAI partnership, promoting a rich learning environment. Leaders in the AI sector are increasingly focusing on the educational applications of this technology, which uplift teacher tools, student skill development, and a nationwide training program for educators in collaboration with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

“This collaboration with OpenAI reflects our ambitious vision: to create a future-ready ecosystem that nurtures meaningful learning and achievement at every educational stage,” expressed Instructure CEO Steve Daly. “It marks a significant advancement for the education community as we continuously enhance the learning experience and support improved student outcomes.”
