It’s been two years since the soothing melodies of Sababa 5’s previous full-length album, Aspan, and just about a year since they delighted us with their collaborative EP alongside the enchanting Japanese vocalist Yurika Hanashima. With Nadir, the band’s compositions have evolved into a more mature expression, beckoning us to pause and reflect. Their journey to France seems to have infused a sophistication into their sound, gracefully merging elements of Middle Eastern rock, psychedelic funk, and Americana, with the gentle undertones of reggae softly echoing through tracks like the beautifully meandering “Atom.”
Imagine the 2022 self-titled album as a buoyant, youthful spirit, while Nadir embodies a more world-wise essence, inviting listeners to engage deeply. Guitarist Ilan Smilan creates spacious yet catchy melodies, layered with flowing wah-wah effects—a perfect example being the captivating “Timor.” There’s an ease to his artistry; he doesn’t rush, allowing the notes to linger. “Tell,” evoking traditional Turkish ballads, serves as a heartfelt centerpiece, rounded by a synth line that dances with bittersweet nostalgia. The title track gives its central groove room to breathe, while the brief yet fascinating “Ignition” unfurls gracefully, offering a gentle transition into the evening-inspired rhythm of “Sab.”
The overarching ambiance of Nadir is dark, seductive, and quietly cinematic, inviting us to slow down and savor each moment. With this album, Sababa 5 encourages us to take our time as we journey through their melodic landscapes.
