You may not recognize Ludovico Einaudi by name, but there’s a good chance his captivating and soothing compositions have graced your ears. Einaudi is celebrated as one of the most streamed living classical composers, inviting listeners into a deeply emotive experience through his music.

He expresses, “I need to work around something that I feel is moving — something in my heart, in my belly.” His latest album, The Summer Portraits, is a gentle journey back to his childhood in Turin, Italy, filled with childlike wonder that lies at the core of his creativity. “I never grew up, in a way. I feel the heart is still the heart of when I was 14,” he shares.

As part of our latest Sense of Place series, Einaudi reflects on his unique experiences, such as creating music for Nomadland without the pressure of original compositions, memories of his grandfather’s journey from Italy to escape adversity, and performing on a barge in the serene Arctic Ocean.
