In the mid-1960s, many Americans first encountered the peaceful sounds of Indian music when Beatle George Harrison introduced the sitar in “Norwegian Wood.” Concurrently, the classical world welcomed a beautiful collaboration when violinist Yehudi Menuhin joined the esteemed sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar to create West Meets East, an album that reached the Billboard charts and won a Grammy award.

Today, this enriching tradition continues through the open-hearted classical guitarist Sharon Isbin. She shares her melodious journey with Strings for Peace, a cherished family of Indian musicians who gracefully play the sarod, a deeper-toned sibling of the sitar. The renowned Amjad Ali Khan, along with his talented sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, represents a rich lineage of sarod craftsmanship that has evolved over centuries. Their exquisite sarods, crafted from vintage teak wood and goat skin in Kolkata, resonate with warmth and beauty.

The set opens and closes with two traditional-sounding compositions by Khan, enveloping listeners in a soothing atmosphere. As she shares, this piece, composed around 1890, carries with it multicultural roots stretching from the Romani people who journeyed from India to Spain.
