Slikback invites us into a space of creativity and resilience. The Kenyan musician, known as Freddy Mwaura Njau, has faced challenges, such as visa complications, which kept him from sharing his music on grand stages. Yet, in response to these obstacles, he chose not to wait but to create freely. Self-releasing much of his work through platforms that celebrate independent art, he has gracefully woven together a 22-track collection that showcases his odyssey through sound.
His debut full-length album, *Attrition*, released under the respected Planet Mu label, is a captivating exploration that emerged during his time in Poland. While awaiting another visa, Njau crafted this album with intention, blending various experimental sounds into cohesive pieces that reflect his unique artistry. With a masterful touch, he shapes his techno influences into rich, abstract forms—like a potter enhancing clay with gentle water.
The essence of *Attrition* remains true to Njau’s journey, featuring striking drum compositions that resonate deeply. Tracks like “Sheltered” showcase energetic percussion that embraces the listener with vibrant bursts, while “Knot” embodies an intensity akin to a rhythmic dance, grounding listeners in its immersive soundscapes. Fans of Slikback will find joy in the depth and complexity of his sound, which consistently draws them back.
Beyond the energetic beats, *Attrition* also reveals softer, more ambient elements that add layers of emotion. The haunting sub bass in “Duality” is beautifully complemented by soaring string melodies, inviting listeners to feel a sense of upliftment, while the chanting samples in “Fracture” evoke a sense of ritual and connection. This album transcends mere sound; it becomes an emotional journey.
Several tracks serve as serene interludes before the energetic crescendos. “Snow” introduces playful mallet sounds gently brushed against soft synths, creating a luminous atmosphere reminiscent of glowing street lamps on misty nights. This calmness breathes tension into the experience, akin to the serene moments before a grand transition. “Semblance of Composure” offers a soothing pause before the lively rhythms of “Taped,” showcasing Njau’s ability to balance intensity with tranquility.
The restless energy in Njau’s music fuels his creativity, encouraging exploration of new soundscapes. His distinctive percussion flits like a gentle breeze over a pond, while tracks like “Spend” intricately blend varied tempos, creating an exhilarating joy for listeners. Njau embraces spontaneity, letting each misstep become a beautiful part of the composition.
*Attrition* is not merely a showcase of Slikback’s unique sound; it is a celebration of growth and transformation within his artistic voice. By integrating fresh, romantic sounds and drawing from diverse influences, he expands the boundaries of techno, creating an expansive sonic landscape. This album stands as a radiant milestone for an artist whose journey is as vibrant and dynamic as the music itself.
