Spotify has gracefully updated its iOS and Android apps to enhance the experience on tablets and foldable phones. Launched for all users on Thursday, this new design thoughtfully utilizes the additional space available on tablets. For instance, on an iPad, you can explore music in a larger window on the left side of the screen, while the now playing sidebar on the right beautifully showcases album art, controls, and even lyrics.

The app is now even more adaptable; when you switch from portrait to landscape mode, it lovingly reconfigures the interface (rather than just resizing it) to create a more harmonious viewing experience.

The sidebar on the right can easily be collapsed with a gentle touch of the down arrow in the top left or expanded to fill the entire display. In addition to controls and information about the currently playing song, it also features extra content below, including related videos and details about the artist. Another delightful enhancement is a prominent “Switch to Video/Audio” button. Nicole Burrow, head of design at Spotify, shared, “Tablets provide more room to explore, so we designed it to invite you to browse and discover new favorites alongside what’s already playing. The aim was simple: Wherever you open Spotify, it should feel unmistakably like Spotify.”

This update is especially timely, as it enhances the Spotify app not only on tablets but also on foldable devices. With the increasing pace of foldable phone introductions—particularly as Apple is rumored to be working on its first foldable phone—the iPhone Fold—it’s a perfect moment for this thoughtful redesign.
