Finding Light in Music: Jeff Tweedy’s Twilight Override

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy shares his new triple solo album, Twilight Override, as a response to the sense that we often find ourselves in the shadowy corners of the day.

Can creating and enjoying music bring a sense of peace to our lives? While it may seem ambitious, the songs featured in this week’s mix gently explore the transformative power of creativity. They invite us to find clarity, calm, and a brief escape from the challenges surrounding us.

Imagine nearly two hours of soothing melodies designed to fill an overwhelming world with goodness and light. In addition to Tweedy’s heartfelt work, we are delighted to present the talents of singer and guitarist Jay Som, who collaborates with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World for her first album in over six years. John Vanderslice and producer James Riotto introduce their new project, Google Earth, along with an album called For Mac OS X 10.11. We also enjoy the introspective tones of Goon, while drummer and producer Kassa Overall beautifully reinterprets classic hip-hop tracks by artists like Wu-Tang Clan, OutKast, and Digable Planets as calming jazz instrumentals.

NPR Music editor Sheldon Pearce and host Robin Hilton join forces to update their running list of the year’s most uplifting songs.

Featured Artists and Songs:

• Jay Som & Jim Adkins: “Float,” from Belong
• Google Earth (John Vanderslice & James Riotto): “meow meow,” from For Mac OS X 10.11
• Goon: “For Cutting The Grass,” from Dream 3
• Jeff Tweedy: “One Tiny Flower,” from Twilight Override
• Kassa Overall: “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like That),” from Cream
