‘The Roses’ Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Navigate a Rough Divorce
If you’ve ever wanted to see Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch exchange witty insults (and oranges), today is your lucky day. Searchlight Pictures has released a trailer for The Roses, an upcoming dark comedy centered around a tumultuous divorce. Directed by Jay Roach (known for Meet the Parents and Bombshell) and written by Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things), The Roses reimagines the 1989 dark comedy The War of The Roses, which is based on the novel by Warren Adler. The original film featured performances by Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas, and Danny DeVito, who also directed.
In The Roses, Cumberbatch and Colman star as Theo and Ivy Rose. Theo is a high-powered architect while Ivy is a successful chef, and they appear to have a wonderful family life. However, tension mounts when Theo’s career begins to falter just as Ivy’s flourishes, leading to a competitive divorce that includes a showdown over their beautiful house.
The trailer is packed with sharp jabs ("You are a bottomless pit of need") and features glimpses of the intense confrontations between Cumberbatch and Colman. If you think the arguments are heated, just wait until Ivy pulls a gun on Theo—who responds with a thrown orange, surprisingly effective in the heat of the moment.
Additionally, The Roses boasts a stellar supporting cast that includes Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon. Be sure to check out the full trailer to experience the entertaining dynamics of the Cumberbatch-Colman showdown.
The Roses is set to hit theaters on August 29.
