Meta introduces direct messaging feature to the web version of Threads.
Meta is bringing a refreshing feature to the web version of Threads that feels like a natural addition. As noted by Engadget, Threads executive Connor Hayes shared an image revealing a thoughtful redesign for the browser-based platform. This update introduces several new elements in the left sidebar, including the ability to effortlessly switch between different feeds. Observant users will also appreciate the inclusion of a direct message inbox—something that has been part of the Threads mobile app since last June. After nearly a year, web users can look forward to this enhancement.
While Hayes’ post didn’t specify an exact launch date for this redesign, there’s no need to rush just yet if you’re a web-based Threads user eager to send and receive DMs. The only indication given is that users can anticipate seeing some of these updates “in the coming weeks.”
For those familiar with social media, it may seem curious that there has been such a significant difference in feature availability between the mobile and web versions of Threads. However, this distinction makes sense—Threads has gained popularity primarily among mobile users. The platform X still holds sway as the favorite microblogging service on desktop browsers, at least in terms of user numbers. Meta is simply prioritizing where they see the most engagement. But the good news is that web users can now take comfort in knowing they are not overlooked.
