TikTok launches Community Notes as Footnotes, a fresh fact-checking feature.

Community Notes are becoming a beloved feature among social media platforms. X has them, Meta has them, and now, they’re making their way to TikTok. Earlier this year, TikTok announced the pilot of Footnotes, its own version of Community Notes, and today, they’re officially rolling out in the U.S. for those in the pilot program. Approximately 80,000 users are contributing to Footnotes, with participants required to have an active TikTok account for a minimum of six months, reside in the U.S., maintain a clean record free from community guidelines violations, and be at least 18 years old. If you feel inspired to join this initiative, consider applying.

Footnotes will “start to appear on videos in the coming weeks for our U.S. community, who will also be able to rate them,” TikTok shared in a press release.

TikTok mentions, “At first, it may take some time for a footnote to become public as contributors get started and become more familiar with the feature. The more footnotes that are written and rated on various topics, the smarter and more effective the system becomes.” As the ranking systems learn and evolve, there’s a hopeful expectation that the gap between writing a footnote and making it visible will shorten over time.

To ensure quality, footnotes will undergo a combination of automated and human moderation, with users empowered to report footnotes they believe are inaccurate or violate TikTok’s guidelines. “Footnotes builds on our extensive efforts to maintain platform integrity with content labels, search banners, and a global fact-checking program, which help users grasp the reliability of content and access authoritative sources,” TikTok noted in its communication.

This launch is accompanied by a variety of features designed to enhance user experience, including Discover & Learn, Family Pairing, a well-being mission, and new tools for creators.
