This is true for the journey of Tiny Desk, which has been shared through an array of mediums—whether through insightful YouTube breakdowns, thoughtful newspaper features, or engaging conversations in podcasts. It’s a shared celebration, reflecting the enthusiasm of a devoted and ever-growing fan base who cherish this special concert series.
Tiny Desk Radio invites listeners to unwind and relish the serene atmosphere, featuring concerts and artist stories that encourage a fresh approach to their music. In our inaugural episode, we embrace our own Tiny Desk origin tale, blending history with a soothing “greatest hits” montage that highlights the beauty of these performances. If you listen closely, you’ll find an extended auditory experience filled with enchanting clips, including magical moments from celebrated artists like Chaka Khan, Chris Stapleton, Sesame Street, and Mac Miller.
To set the scene, Tiny Desk unfolds in a real office, filled with natural light in Washington, D.C. Here, the NPR Music staff harmoniously balance their daily tasks with the enchanting sounds of live performance just nearby. The concept emerged in 2008 from a simple idea shared by Bob Boilen and Stephen Thompson, born from a desire to hear a quiet singer-songwriter amidst the noise of a bustling music festival. This inspired them to invite the artist to perform in their office—and before they knew it, the Tiny Desk journey began with Laura Gibson’s heartfelt performance.
A transformative moment arrived in 2014 when T-Pain’s mesmerizing concert went viral, showcasing his talent without AutoTune. This pivotal experience illuminated the true essence of Tiny Desk: a nurturing space that encourages artists to explore new dimensions of their artistry. For Taylor Swift, it represented a return to her roots, performing her songs on guitar and piano. Meanwhile, Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso embraced the creative opportunities with unique arrangements, while IDLES maintained their vibrant energy, adapting to the intimate setting.
More than 1,200 talented artists have stepped into our corner of NPR Headquarters to embrace the Tiny Desk challenge—a delightful collaborative process with NPR Music producers, audio technicians, and videographers.
