U.S. Housing Authority to Consider Inclusion of Cryptocurrency in Mortgage Applications

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) will study whether crypto holdings should be considered when Americans apply for a mortgage, Director Bill Pulte announced on X. The review will assess how assets, such as bitcoin, could factor into the income-and-wealth evaluations at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the 11 regional Federal Home Loan Banks that underpin most U.S. mortgages.

Pulte’s comments come as the U.S. becomes increasingly crypto-friendly under the current administration. He was sworn in on March 14 after being nominated by the President. Public filings reveal that he holds as much as $1 million in both bitcoin and Solana’s SOL, along with stakes in various firms, including those in crypto, air conditioning, and media.

Currently, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stipulate that cryptocurrency holdings must be “exchanged into U.S. dollars and held in a U.S. or state-regulated financial institution” to be eligible for consideration.
