Transforming Human Connections with the Natural Environment

A cutting-edge research centre that aims to deepen our understanding of animal feelings and nurture harmonious coexistence will launch this autumn at the London School of Economics. The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience, generously supported by £4m in funding from the Jeremy Coller Foundation, is poised to be a beacon of compassion and innovation.

The centre’s inaugural director, Prof Jonathan Birch, envisions it as a place for “ethical moonshots,” encouraging us to embrace a world where all sentient beings are respected—even the tiniest among us. “Let’s create a reality in which every being is cherished,” he gently reminds us.

“Our objective is to utilize the emerging science of animal minds to foster better policies, laws, and nurturing practices for our beloved animals,” Birch shares. Though change may not occur overnight, this centre holds the promise to spark uplifting conversations in the UK and beyond, inviting us to reconnect with our true selves.

The project will assemble leading thinkers from philosophy, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and biology to collaborate on shared research. Initial priorities will include developing frameworks for the ethical use of AI concerning animals, revamping welfare laws to protect insects and other invertebrates, and initiating informational campaigns designed to gently shift public attitudes and behaviors.

Birch reflects on Britain’s rich history of animal welfare, acknowledging how the industrialization of agriculture has sometimes obscured this commitment. “We think of ourselves as a nation of animal lovers,” he observes, “though in recent times, we seem to have lost a bit of our ambition.”

He notes, “Progress has faced hurdles, and in some instances, we see a regression. Farmed animals and farmers have become cogs in relentless corporate machines prioritizing profit over care, compassion, and dignity.” Yet, the centre is dedicated to reigniting the conversation in the UK and beyond, helping us rediscover our interconnectedness with all living beings.

Birch suggests that advancements in AI present both challenges and opportunities for animal welfare. His colleagues will explore ways to harness this technology to understand our animal neighbors while safeguarding them from potential harm. “We aspire to transform the way humans connect with the rest of the natural world,” he shares. “While some may view this as an unattainable dream, we are determined to navigate the space between what is thought to be ‘possible’ and ‘impossible.’”
