“Wednesday” Season 2, Volume 1: Exploring Ophelia’s Character

Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 feels even more like an Addams Family affair than its predecessor, introducing beloved extended family members such as Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) and Grandmama Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley). Yet a key relative remains uninvited to the gathering: Ophelia Frump.

Ophelia is Morticia’s younger sister and has graced several other Addams Family films and TV shows, including The Addams Family series (portrayed by Carolyn Jones), the film (played by Allegra Kent), Addams Family Values (played by Laura Esterman), and The New Addams Family (played by Lisa Calder). Often presented as cheerful, her presence in Wednesday is likely to reflect a different narrative.

Who is Ophelia in Wednesday Season 2, and why is she so important?

Catherine Zeta-Jones embodies Morticia, who is deeply affected by Ophelia’s tragic story. Like Morticia and Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), Ophelia also possesses psychic abilities. However, her journey took a dark turn at Nevermore, leading to her receiving black tears from her visions. In an effort to help her, Hester sent Ophelia to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, despite Morticia’s pleas against it.

This painful chapter in the Frump family history plays a significant role in Morticia and Hester’s strained relationship. It’s also the source of Morticia’s concern for Wednesday as she explores Goody’s book of spells. Morticia is determined to guide her daughter and safeguard her from a similar fate.

However, Ophelia’s time at Willow Hill doesn’t conclude her story. Uncle Fester shares that Morticia once asked him to check on Ophelia, only to find that she had mysteriously disappeared during his visit, missing for two decades—or has she?

Have we already met Ophelia in Wednesday Season 2?

In episode 4, Wednesday and Fester stumble upon a troubling experimental program at Willow Hill, known as LOIS (Long-term Outcast Integration Study). This initiative aims to extract abilities from Outcasts and bestow them upon Normies, with a concerning success already achieved. All subjects are there involuntarily, as Willow Hill has faked their deaths to prevent anyone from seeking them out. Could it be that Ophelia’s disappearance was another deception?

It’s possible that Ophelia was drawn into LOIS due to her psychic gifts, and that’s where her presence has lingered for the past 20 years. Wednesday and Fester encounter a woman (Frances O’Connor) who appears despondent, seemingly longing for an escape that won’t come from them. This character stands apart from the others, both in appearance and behavior, hinting that she might be the long-lost Ophelia. The connections to Morticia’s descriptions of her are striking, making one wonder if it’s fate that Wednesday, a psychic sharing Ophelia’s haunting visions, might be the one to rescue her aunt.

Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 is now available for viewing, with Part 2 set to debut soon.
