In the rich tapestry of British and Irish culture, there’s a beautiful tradition of playful creativity—artists and musicians who take the most familiar expressions and transform them into something profoundly unique. This exploration often reveals deep connections to the collective history and subconscious of society. Think of legendary figures like Lewis Carroll or rock luminaries like Kate Bush. One of the captivating yet lesser-known representatives of this tradition is Wevie Stonder.
Originating from the vibrant, artsy haven of Brighton in the 1990s, Wevie Stonder emerged amidst a community of eclectic creators that included innovative labels and experimental sound artists. Their aesthetic leans towards whimsical and Dadaist, merging verbal artistry with lively musical arrangements that are both adventurous and captivating.
After a reflective 11-year hiatus, Wevie Stonder returns with their delightful offering, “Sure Beats Living.” The album opens with a whimsical Scotsman performing a magic trick, followed by a playful homage to “Carpet Squares” set against an upbeat 1980s backdrop. The journey continues with a scientific exploration of charming “bean boys,” accompanied by soothing synth melodies that create an engaging auditory landscape.
Each track presents a delightful blend of electropop and smooth jazz, interwoven with delightful oddities that prompt a sense of wonder. With phrases such as “eat it, stick it in your pocket, just look at the state of it,” the experience transcends mere words and invites listeners to embrace the joy of letting go.
Unlike typical offbeat or psychedelic sounds that may aim to provoke, this music feels as if you’ve wandered into a fully realized world, ripe with creativity. The magic lies in the mystery—allowing yourself to immerse in this soundscape, releasing any need for understanding, and simply enjoying the moment. Here, the beauty can be found in the exploration, letting the rhythms of language and music weave around you like a gentle embrace.
